  • flexible space for individual and collaborative learning, including peer assisted coaching, and
  • space for events, exhibitions and social activities.

Building work is beginning over the semester break and so Library and IT service points will be temporarily relocating from Level 3 to the Learning Common area in North Wing Level 2 of the Library.

Services will close at 12 noon on Friday 23rd December to allow the relocation to occur. Library and IT service points will re-open on Level 2 on 5th January and 9th January respectively.

University Library’s Science Fiction collection explored by visiting fellowship recipient

The University Library is pleased to support visiting CAUL/ASA (Council of Australian University Librarians/Australian Society of Authors) Fellowship recipient, Dr Jessie Lymn, from the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University.

Jessie will have access to our unique Science Fiction collection as part her research project on the history of Australian fanzines.

The fellowship is sponsored by CAUL and ASA as part of an effort to explore the richness of special collections at University Libraries and encourage creative engagement by the Australian writing community.

The University Library has an internationally renowned Science Fiction collection which includes rare fanzines. Jessie’s resulting work will improve scholarly understanding and awareness of our collection when published in various journals and an upcoming book on fanzines.

“I am excited by the depth and breadth of the collection. It will give great insight into the materiality and practices of fanzine culture and highlight the importance of their preservation” Jessie said.

Hear fascinating stories at our next Living Library Event

This month Murdoch is again inviting staff and students to the University Library to be swept up in a collection of enthralling stories, without even picking up a book.

Fresh off the success of our first Living Library event earlier this year, Murdoch’s Equity and Social Inclusion Office, in collaboration with the University Library and the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, proudly presents a variety of living books celebrating the NAIDOC theme 'Living Narratives of our Nation' on Thursday 11 August.

The premise of the Living Library is simple: instead of borrowing books, visitors are invited to borrow a person for 5-7 minutes to share in their life story.

Murdoch University’s Living Library series is a collaborative project between Equity and Social Inclusion, Murdoch Institute of Technology’s LACE Program and the University Library.

No registration is necessary and everyone is welcome to this unique University event!

When: Thursday, 11 August, 11.30am - 1:00pm
Where: South St Campus Library, North Wing Level 2, 24/7 Common Area

Come say hello (dates for 2016 coming soon)!

What’s been happening in the Library this past year?
Well, 2015 was a busy year,  full of surprises.  Here are some highlights …

Rusty
Rusty, a gorgeous seven-year-old kelpie cross, spent a few hours in the library with his owner Dr Teresa Collins, Senior Lecturer in Animal Welfare and Ethics from the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences.
Students had the opportunity to pet Rusty, talk to him or simply admire him from a distance. We hope Rusty or a friend will be back in 2016 - full details of their whereabouts will be advertised to students and staff before the next visit.

Lighting
To improve lighting in your study spaces, all lights within the library building have been changed to LED lights.  This is also better for the environment as the new lights are much more energy efficient.

24/7 Learning Common expansion
You asked for it, and we delivered! The expanded 24/7 Learning Common was launched in October and now includes all of North Wing Level 2 and the Library Courtyard. This means nearly twice as many computers available and 150% more study space. We also installed microwaves in this area to help keep you going through those long study sessions.
Early in 2016 we will be improving the amenities, including providing additional furniture.

Mandurah Campus Library

Last year, the Mandurah Campus Library relocated to Building 101 in the Learning Common, adjacent to the computer lab and snack and chat.
The Library has 18 computers, a printer and a colour photocopier /scanner as well as a quiet study room, and is open from 8-4pm Monday to Friday.

My Unit Readings
In 2015 we trialled a new system for managing reading lists and it has been a huge success - we are now rolling out this system for all units for 2016.
Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback, and thank you for your patience while we continue to improve the staff and student experience.
