Murdoch University Library is honoured to receive a Community Heritage Grant from the National Library of Australia to support the development of our Science Fiction Collection. This nationally significant collection is home to almost a century of Australian Science Fiction fandom history, and has been described as ‘absolutely unique compared to other collections in Australia’. We’re very pleased that our collection has been recognised in this way.
Community Heritage grants are provided to assist with the preservation of locally owned, but nationally significant, collections of materials. The grant will be used to fund an official significance assessment of our Science Fiction Collection by an external expert. This assessment will document the importance of the collection, and provide a basis for future development. In addition to the funding, the grant provides for specialist training for our staff to ensure the collection is maintained in a proper manner.
