New University Librarian

Library staff warmly welcome Ms Susan Ashcroft to the position of University Librarian at Murdoch University.
Susan has been on secondment as Interim University Librarian since May 2015, and has introduced a number of new initiatives in her time with us. She has previous experience working in various library sectors in Australia and overseas, most recently as Director of Client Services at the State Library of WA. We look forward to the next five years with Susan at the helm.

It’s a new year! Look what we’ve been up to!

It’s a new year! Look what we’ve been up to!
We hope you had a great break, enjoyed some summer sun and time with family and friends! The University Library also took a short break over the festive season but we are back and ready for a great 2016!
Check out our Summer Opening hours for each Library’s specific opening times. Those of you studying over the summer period, remember that the South Street 24/7 Learning Common on Level 2 is open for all of your air-conditioning needs.

Market Daze and O Week Stalls
We love getting out and meeting new and continuing students during Orientation and at the South Street Campus Market Daze.
Our University Library Team are out on Bush Court to share important information with you and answer any questions you may have.
Come say hello (dates for 2016 coming soon)!

What’s been happening in the Library this past year?
Well, 2015 was a busy year,  full of surprises.  Here are some highlights …

Rusty
Rusty, a gorgeous seven-year-old kelpie cross, spent a few hours in the library with his owner Dr Teresa Collins, Senior Lecturer in Animal Welfare and Ethics from the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences.
Students had the opportunity to pet Rusty, talk to him or simply admire him from a distance. We hope Rusty or a friend will be back in 2016 - full details of their whereabouts will be advertised to students and staff before the next visit.

Lighting
To improve lighting in your study spaces, all lights within the library building have been changed to LED lights.  This is also better for the environment as the new lights are much more energy efficient.

24/7 Learning Common expansion
You asked for it, and we delivered! The expanded 24/7 Learning Common was launched in October and now includes all of North Wing Level 2 and the Library Courtyard. This means nearly twice as many computers available and 150% more study space. We also installed microwaves in this area to help keep you going through those long study sessions.
Early in 2016 we will be improving the amenities, including providing additional furniture.

Mandurah Campus Library

Last year, the Mandurah Campus Library relocated to Building 101 in the Learning Common, adjacent to the computer lab and snack and chat.
The Library has 18 computers, a printer and a colour photocopier /scanner as well as a quiet study room, and is open from 8-4pm Monday to Friday.

My Unit Readings
In 2015 we trialled a new system for managing reading lists and it has been a huge success - we are now rolling out this system for all units for 2016.
Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback, and thank you for your patience while we continue to improve the staff and student experience.
