National Year of Reading 2012

Murdoch University Library is a registered partner in the National Year of Reading 2012. As a partner the Library is running an online book club to support and promote Australian literature and encourage discussion about the featured titles across the University community.

At the end of 2011, the Australian public was invited to nominate their favourite Australian books and by popular vote, 8 fiction and non-fiction titles were selected because they best articulated the Australian experience.

We have chosen 4 of these titles to be read and discussed during first semester, 2012.
We invite all staff, students and friends to join our book club on Facebook.

Have a good read, share your ideas, learn more about different views of Australian life!
  • The White Earth - saga of a family's grim past, ranging from colonial days to recent times. Available as an ebook and in print from the Library.
  • Well done, those men - memoirs of a Vietnam veteran. Available as an ebook and in print from the Library.
  • Listening to Country - exploration of friendship and meaning between a non-indigenous woman and her husband's indigenous family. Available as an ebook and in print from the Library.
  • Smoke and Mirrors : a Brad Chen novel - murder, mystery and political intrigue in the Whitlam era. Print copies available from Murdoch Library.

Those titles for which ebooks are not available from Murdoch University Library can be accessed from your favourite ebook seller. Where ebooks are available in the Library catalogue, they are accessible only to Murdoch staff and students. Additional print copies are available from the Murdoch Bookshop.

Be part of an Australia-wide book reading experience and explore different aspects of what it means to be Australian.

Titles we will be reading in semester 2 are:
  • Time's Long Ruin
  • Jasper Jones
  • Wanting
  • The idea of home
